A Word of Encouragement

My philosophy of education is to qualify people for life rather than simply earning a living. The person who has read and thought about many subjects is, with the necessary training, the most capable in whatever he or she chooses to do to be fulfilled in life and in service to the community.

Each of you will continue doing creative things and I hope you will continue to share them with me and one another. I value all the ways in which you have already done so, and anticipate many more, out of the box, creative endeavors from living the life God has given you, not what society has tried to dictate to you. I have enjoyed having you in my home and I bless you to create your own homes where art, travel, poetry, music, history, scientific discoveries and great books are discussed, created and appreciated.

We have had many conversations about how important it is to make hard choices, to strengthen your will to become a Person of character. Today, you are closer than ever to achieving the goal of becoming a Person of Integrity, Truth, Wisdom and Strength. A person who is obedient in little things, making wise choices daily, loving your family, caring for your friends and co-workers, which truly can change the world around you as you honor those in your circle of family and friends.

More important than a college education or career, our world needs good men and women, who will work hard but understand the value of rest, who honor their word, who value truth and live as good citizens.

Graduating high school is a point in time when you are on the cusp of something new as you build on the foundation your parents have laid. It is a time when everyone talks about chasing dreams and making the world a better place. But it’s also proving ground. How will you react when plans fall through, and other people’s sins hurt you? How will you deal with your own failures as well as the failures of others – these things will continue to determine your character.

Your character shapes your life. Each person’s choices will influence another person’s life. You reflect the people who have raised you at this point. The next 5 years will be influenced by the books you read, the music you listen to, the friends you keep and the conversations you have.

“To think fairly, always speak truly and act justly towards all persons and on all occasions, which is our duty as followers of Christ, is a matter that requires continued attention and application– it is, in fact, the study of a lifetime.”

You have a strong foundation. It will not be swept away in the storms of life. But it’s up to you what you build, how and where and when you build upon it. Choose wisely.
